Back in the 80s, before I knew Hubs, there was Boyfriend. And Boyfriend worked with Jim. And Jim was seeing Betty. And we were in our twenties and thought we'd be all grown up and go out to a nice restaurant on a double date.
So we did.
And Betty got drunk off her ass on two drinks at dinner. She was slurring. She was staggering. It happens.*
After dinner, we all went back to my place. Once inside, Betty fell over the arm of the couch. Luckily, she landed somewhat on the couch.
Jim, looking embarrassed, explained that Betty was a bit of a lightweight, and gently but firmly righted her. Boyfriend and I played it down. I asked if they wanted some soda.
It was at this point that Betty spotted the CD rack. She went over and promptly found Anita Baker's Rapture, which was hugely popular at the time.
Betty: Ooooo, Anita Baker! Can we play it?
Me: Sure! I can put it on--
Jim: No, I don't think that's a good idea.
Betty, now holding the CD, throws her arms around Jim and almost misses: Come oooOOOoonnnn! Swee-et love, hear me calling out your na-a-ame, I feel no shame, I'm in love...
Jim, looking more awkward by the minute: Betty, honey, not here.
It became abundantly clear to Boyfriend and me that Betty and Jim had employed Rapture for, well, rapture. Jim managed to get Betty out the door and into his car, thank us, apologize again to us, and get them on their way in the blink of an eye.
Not for nothing did that album sell eight million copies. ;)
Take your pick...
Tangential question du jour: Are double dates a good idea or the work of the devil?
Direct question du jour: What music says sexy time to you?
* Sometimes to other people, even.

Never had a problem on a DD. Maybe I just had boring friends.
Who needs music?
Wv: netiv - What the internet had when it was sick.
The last double date I was on ended with the other couple getting into a fight over Easter during dinner that (they told me later) ultimately led to them yelling at each other on the streetcorner. Also, it was the last time I ever got asked out by my date.
So I dunno.
Hate double dates! No bad experiences but I hate sitting there interviewing my friend's flavour of the month.
Sexy music? Don't ask me. I too often get it on during Jay Leno's monologue.
Double dates can work if everyone knows (and likes) everyone else really well.
Sexy music? I can't think right now - there's a trombone blaring in the background, a student. Not sexy. Al Green - "Let's Stay Together" his voice is very sexy. The Chi-Lites, definitely. I'm showing my age here. I know people used to dig Barry White but his schtick always made me giggle.
These days? The musical sound of the ocean.
they are a good idea and the work of the devil all at once.
sexy music hmm we're odd so we'd gotten it on to Marilyn Manson and White Zombie
not necessarily because of the music they're just fun to do it to.
I love a double date. Makes for much less awkwardness if your date happens to be an idiot.
Oh, and Justin Beiber is, like, the sexiest music around.
I may be lieing about that last one.
Double dates are good but only if you're not on one.
I'd like to go on a date, period.
They are definitely the work of the devil. It's like bad day hell with witnesses.
I've had some good double dates and some bad double dates. The ones in the past year have been good ... I think I'll stick with those peeps.
I listened to a lot of Anita Baker in college. I could see her being good for sexy time. On the other end of the spectrum, Missy Elliott can work some magic, too. :)
I wonder if Betty is still feeling remorse over that experience? Ouch.
Double dates are ok if both couples have been together for some time. If its a first or second date for the other couple then they are usually a disaster.
i love double dates! but i guess i'm thinking of them more as a "couples date" where me and my bf hang out with another fun couple for the night? not, like, when you first start dating a guy and he brings a buddy who's on a first date with someone he's been set up with. that would be bad.
Gosh, I remember "Rapture"...I also remember Donna Summer's, "Ring My Bell." Ahem. :)
My experience with double dates is that it is unusual when both couples are moving at the same speed. There can be a lot of awkward moments if not. Did Jim and Betty end up together. Hope not...
Double dates can be fun, depends on who you go out with and what you do on the date. (P.S. I have never gotten drunk on a double date. LOL)
I don't really like music during "sexy time". It's usually too distracting. BEFORE that time though, I love to listen to 70s rock and punk music! :)
Mike: Not me.
Lemon Gloria: If only they'd started throwing Easter eggs at each other...
Mac and Cheese: It's the chin that does it for you?
Cyndy: I'm with you on Barry White. It makes me laugh.
ClevelandPoet: Just the image of M.M. is enough to turn me off.
Lori: Never thought about the possibility that the other folks could save you from killing your date.
Moooooog35: Check!
Kate: Ask Sexy Farmer out.
repliderium.com: But witness for the defense or the prosecution?
I don't know what that means either.
Kate: Good for Getting Ur Freak On.
Reya Mellicker: No idea. I hope not--it's over 20 years ago.
In other news, I'm old.
lbluca77, Alice: Good point.
Drama Queen: You can blame Donna Summer for a lot of things but "Ring My Bell" isn't one of them. That was Anita Ward.
Barbara: They got married. And divorced.
Pauline: So, you run to turn the music off at the critical moment?
Double dates can be okay... there is some awkwardness but it can help build up good tension...? What am I saying? Haha
Not sure music is ever really necessary but some songs that I think would be good for sexy time? Sexual Healing by Ben Harper. And Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers.
