This Space Left Intentionally Blank

Music gets trapped in my head. Sometimes a snippet. Sometimes the whole song. Whatever I've heard last, plays over and over and over until I hear something else.

Often, I wind up singing along with the soundtrack in my head without even realizing it. Despite what you might imagine, this is not a relationship enhancer. I'll sometimes realize I've been singing something only when I hear, "How many times are you GOING TO SING THAT?!"

Um, hundreds? That's a pretty good ballpark figure. Let's go with that.

Sometimes, I'll be in a store or at work and I'll be singing. If the last song I've heard happens to be Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American", aside from people assuming I've drunk the Kool-Aid, this is not such a problem:

And I’m proud to be an American,
Where at least I know I’m free.

And I won't forget the men who died,

who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA.

If it is the incredibly catchy Rihanna tune, "Rude Boy"* that I'm singing, say, while I'm making copies, this can get rather awkward:

Come here rude boy, boy, can you get it up?
Come here rude boy, boy, is you big enough?

Take it, take it, baby, baby

Take it, take it, love me, love me

I wa- wa- want, what you wa- wa- want

Give it to me, baby, like boom boom boom

I wa- wa- want, what you wa-*needle scratch*wa-Why are you looking at me funny?
*cough* *brisk exit*

If I'm going to get caught singing--and, oh yes, I am--maybe I should get more intentional. You know, like, I meant to do that. Maybe add some sweet moves and expressions?

* She sings these words and he's the rude one?

I *once* let a student play the songs on his phone to get us through a really boring exercise - AK! I thought I was caught up with music!!!

Another song to avoid is: "Do it Like they do on the Discovery Channel" or..."Boom, Boom, Boom, Come Back to my Room"...

When I leave the house in the morning I generally play a song I want in my head as I walk out the door. I call it my outro.

I always thought the Lee Greenwood lyrics were sort of strange:

And I'm proud to be an American,
Where at least I know I'm free

To me it sounds like, well, it kind of sucks, but at least I know I'm free. Why doesn't he say that it's a cool place above and beyond the coolness of being free?

Got to like the Wii prop in the video. Yes, I watched it that far. I think I must be avoiding work.

Oh! Hahaha I've never heard that Rihanna song. She's definitely the one who's rude though. :P

I don't even listen to it all that much but I always get "booty" rap songs stuck in my head. Always. If what I'm singing is not about big booties, then it's something Julie Andrews would sing. Lately, I've been singing "Getting To Know You" wherever I go. It makes me feel like I should be sitting up super straight and walking around with a bird perched on my fingers.

The kid in that video is very good at what he does and has real potential. I'd definitely pay money to see his show when he grows up, but I'd expect to see him in a costume, heels, and a wig by then. That was adorable.

For me, lately, it's Lady Gaga.. which admittedly could be worse. They're so damn catchy.

LOVE the kid! The way he sang the final chorus was just great. You should definitely mimic him whenever possible :)

I have the exact same problem: music in my head, all day, all the time. That's fine when it's an enjoyable song, but when it's two lines of something that I don't know very well and it repeats over and over, it can be annoying.

Your post reminded me of this old clip from Cheers:

I'm all about the ear worms. Lately it's been the booty shaking songs from my Zumba class - complete with the moves. Niiice.

I had to stop that video - it made me too uncomfortable.

Man, That Rihanna song is really getting around. I wonder what it's about....

I couldn't watch more than 10 - 20 seconds of the video. It really creeped me out. Hopefully it's not a relative of yours.

I used to love to sing Nine Inch Nails songs and funnily enough, I got the same kind of looks as you do singing Rihannah. ;)

You know there's a whole area of neurology in which they're trying to figure this out - why it happens. Did you know?

I sing and talk to myself out loud on a constant basis- and get caught at it just as often. I am also one of those people that cannot have an ipod- I immediately start to feel like it's the sound track to the movie that I'm in and I start unintentionally posing and trying to look cool. I wish I was making that up.

froggy: Never again, right?!

Little Ms Blogger: Oh yeah!

restaurant refugee: You have an outro? Wear a long shirt and no one will notice.

Bowie Mike: It's true. Why doesn't he say "where I can get pizza at midnight?" That's something to fight for!

Felisa: Getting to like you, getting to hope you like meeeeee....

Cyndy, The Bug: You think so? Glad you enjoyed it.

ErinSlick: So you walk around singing "wanta take a ride on your disco stick"?

NG: Great clip! Thanks for digging it up.

Tracie: At least you burn calories while people are staring. Props!

Mac and Cheese, Mike: There is something creepy about it, yes? (And, no, no relation, Mike.)

Heff: It's pretty subtle so it's hard to decipher.

Alyxmyself: I'm guessing you're not the only one. Have you seen that video? Wow.

Pauline: I'll bet you did a great job singing it.

Reya Mellicker: Didn't know but I'm willing to put taxpayer money to solving it.

repliderium.com: Ha!

Toe: I miss Salt and Peppa. Great stuff.
