Stand Right, Walk Left. It's a beautiful system when people know it exists. Otherwise, it's just a wistful Utopian dream.

    Definitely a locals vs tourists thing going on here in the Metro. The tension is so real that when I sometimes play tourist in D.C., I want to wear a shirt that says, "I'm a local - not a tourist!" When I'm alone, I'm generally a left side walker - unless I'm going up the escalator in Wheaton or Dupont during a 90 degree July day.

    Funny that this seems to be a rule in most cities I've been to in the States, and yet tourists never seem to know it. Where are they all from?

    Bowie Mike: The Dupont escalator definitely separates the boys from the men. I, apparently, am a boy. A whiny, little boy.

    Mike: I am the IDEA person. I can't be the implementer, too! Jeez.

    After we win the battle of the escalators can we start on the battle of the sidewalks? You know, where four people just *have* to walk side-by-side so they can chatter away blissfully unaware they're blocking the entire sidewalk from both directions. This may annoy me more than the escalator thing. May.

    My theory is that when most people travel and turn into tourists, their brains go on vacation too. They forget how to read, how to mentally process things as complex as crossing a street and how to think rationally. So they drive awfully and stand on the left side of escalators.
